Hike to the Ice Caves at Sam’s Point
Friday, September 13, 2024 09:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area
(845) 647-7989
Join Becca Howe-Parisio,
Environmental Educator, for an adventurous hike to the Ice Caves at Sam's
Point, where the air is always a comfortable 55 degrees Fahrenheit, even during
the height of the summer heat. This nearly four-mile hike includes one steep
hill on a carriage road, but the reward of walking through the cool, dark,
talus cave is worth the effort. While in the cave, educators will explain the
geology of this unique natural area and why it's so special. The footpath
section of this outing does include two primitive ladders and a steep stone
staircase, which some may find challenging. Plan to bring food and lots of
water and we'll have lunch on the trail. This program is recommended for
families of all ages who are capable of hiking this distance and terrain. Meet
at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling
the Sam's Point Visitor Center at 845-647-7989.

Field Guide Friday at Sam’s Point
Friday, September 20, 2024 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area
(845) 647-7989
Dust off your old, field identification guide and join Becca
Howe-Parisio, Environmental Educator, on a hike to learn how to use it. On this
three-mile, moderate adventure, we will look at trees and use a field guide to
identify different trees growing in the Park Preserve. Taking the time to learn
tree identification by working your way through the multiple steps of a field
guide reinforces the unique characteristics of that tree. This leaves a more
durable memory than the quick impression made when using apps on technology. Do
not fret if you don't own a tree field guide, there will be field guides
available to borrow. Field Guide Friday will be a monthly program, focusing on
different topics as the seasons change. This program is suited for anyone old enough
to read and who is interested in learning how to use a book to identify plants,
insects, and more. Participants must bring water and snacks and
wear appropriate
hiking shoes. Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration
is required by calling the Sam's Point Visitor Center at 845-647-7989.
