The Hudson River Schools of Art and Their Ice Age Origins; Robert & Johanna Titus Lecture & Book Signing
Sunday, September 29, 2024 01:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Clermont State Historic Site
Join Robert Titus, retired professor of Geology, and Johanna Titus, retired professor of Biology, for a talk about the Hudson River School of Art and the Ice Age! During the 19th century there was something of a cultural Renaissance right here in the Hudson Valley region. America's first worldclass literature appeared. We also saw the birth of American landscape architecture. Most importantly, led by Thomas Cole, we saw the appearance of the Hudson Valley School of Art. In short, our region became the center of a truly important cultural movement. None of this, we argue, would ever have happened if the Hudson Valley, especially the North Lake area, had not been so heavily glaciated. We take our readers to see how the North Lake glaciers created the landscapes that so inspired the great artists of those times.

Robert and Johanna Titus are best known as popular science writers. Over the years they have written for several regional magazines, including Kaatskill Life and Tri-County Historical Reviews, as well as the Mountain Eagle and the Columbia Paper. They have authored five books on the Catskills and Hudson Valley geology. The Titus's run The Catskill Geologist Facebook page and a blog site, thecatskillgeologist.com

Author Talk: Michael J. Douma and The Slow Death of Slavery in Dutch New York
Saturday, October 5, 2024 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM
Clermont State Historic Site
We are pleased to host a talk with author Michael J. Douma about his new book The Slow Death of Slavery in Dutch New York: A Cultural, Economic, and Demographic History, 1700-1827.Through an extensive and careful look at the data behind slavery in New York, Professor Michael J. Douma overturns many of the common assumptions of slavery in the state. Through his research, he argues that slavery in eighteenth-century New York was mostly rural, heavily Dutch, and generally profitable through the cultivation of wheat. The enslaved population of New York grew under its own accord, was relatively mobile, and played an essential role in negotiating emancipation. Bio: Michael J. Douma is Associate Research Professor at the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, where he is also the Director of the Georgetown Institute for the Study of Markets and Ethics. He has written extensively on the history of the Dutch in the United States. Please note: This event is free to attend. Space is limited, reservations strongly encouraged. Hulda’s Night
Wednesday, October 16, 2024
Rockefeller State Park Preserve
Tickets available on September 9 at 10 am, Hulda's Night is an adventure into the history and legends of the Preserve through live performance. You walk through the night, your path lit only by lanterns. Your group joins a traveler around his fire and listens to local legends. But your journey has only begun, and you must not tarry. Up Old Gory Brook Road, Domine Johannes Ritzema, Pastor of the Old Dutch Church during the Revolutionary War, waits to tell you the struggles of holding a congregation together during the time of war and of the witch living nearby threatening his flock. As you trek down to the Witch's Spring trail, in the distance the magical fairy lights tell you that you are nearing Hulda's Hut and the "witch" awaits you! Here you sit in hand-carved seats made from the very trees that surround you, on the site where Hulda's home may have stood nearly 250 years ago, and hear her tell her story. The coyotes howl and remind you that you are not alone in these woods as you start back. There is a war raging on all sides of you and highway robbery is the order of the day. So you must take care, keep quiet, and choose your words carefully with any you might meet along the way. Hulda’s Night
Wednesday, October 23, 2024
