All day. Interested persons will be searching a 15 mile diameter circle centered on Perry Center, NY. The purpose is to locate the birds using this area which includes all of Silver Lake and the northern half of Letchworth State Park. Interested persons should contact Douglas Bassett at 585-493-3625 prior to December 15th for territory assignment.

Some possibilities include: rocks, water, soil, sky fungi (including lichens and slime molds), plants (moss, ferns, flowers, vines, shrubs, trees) and animals (invertebrates like insects and spiders), fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Bring a lunch, your curiosity of nature and show and tell items.

Meet at the Humphrey Nature Center for all hike options

Hike #1 – Families with younger children. Letchworth CSI – Who Done It?: Journey on a wooded loop less than one mile on nearly level terrain to observe frozen bogs and Trout Pond.

Hike #2 – Exploratory Walk. Winter Wander Between Ponds: Using deer trails and other paths, this 1 ½ mile journey explores the area between Trout Pond and Pine Pond.

Hike #3 – Families with older children. Exotic Trees from Other Lands and State & National Champions: Two-mile loop to Inspiration Point, the Glen Iris Fountain and Middle Falls with more than 200' descent and 200' ascent along trails, roads and stairs.

Hike #4 – Faster paced, longest hike. Winter Hike to View the Great Bend: Three or more mile outing to view the park's deepest canyon from several vantage points along the Gorge Trail.

This is a three or four mile ski hike for the advanced skiers that will meet at the Camper Contact Station, opposite the Perry Entrance. Skiers will be following the Big Flats Trail and sections of the Smokey Hollow Trail and the Park Road. The hike will include long up and down hill runs, which may require ski removal. IF adequate ski conditions do not exist, a two-mile nature hike will replace the ski hike.

Full Moon Nature Ski Hike

The special moonlight ski hike will begin at the Trailside Lodge. This ski hike will be in two parts. The first part reviews some evening precautions and skiing techniques followed by a one-mile loop over sparkling snow and gently rolling terrain. If the challenge of evening perception and balance suits you, after a short intermission part two consists of a different loop for another hour. If adequate ski conditions do not exist, a two-hour, one mile nature hike will replace the ski hike.

Slower paced journey in search of animal stories in the snow and the hidden life on tree bark. Each nature snowshoe walk meets at the Humphrey nature center and will consist of a review of snowshoe types before exploring a mile or so of winter wonderland.
