Fish Wade at Thompson’s Lake

Come and check out who's swimming in Thompson's Lake with ecologist Dr. Doug Fraser. We'll use seines and dip nets in shallow areas to capture, look at, and discuss the ecology and behavior of fish in the lake. Wear shoes and clothing that can get wet. Thacher State Park is home to over 25 miles of trails. Explore the trails with our educators on a series of interpretive walks throughout the park. This week we'll experience views into the Hudson-Mohawk Valley and learn about the geologic processes that shaped the valley on the Escarpment Trail. The rating for this tour is Moderate at 3 miles in length. Meet at the Horseshoe I parking area. Call 518-872-1237 to register. Park entrance fee is $6 per vehicle.

Indian Ladder Trail Guided Walk at Thacher Park

Descend the cliff and learn about the geologic and cultural history of the Helderbergs on this scenic and historic trail. See underground streams, look for fossils and step inside the crevice cave along the trail. Trail is moderately rugged with stairclimbing and a couple of steep slopes. Wear sturdy shoes and meet at the Indian Ladder picnic area. Walk lasts about 1.5 hours. Call 518-872-0800 to register. Park entrance fee is $6 per vehicle.

Karst Geology Walk at Thacher Park

Much of the rock found in Thacher Park is limestone. Limestone can be dissolved through natural processes, giving rise to topography called karst. Features of karst topography include sinkholes and caves. On this walk we will see some fine examples of karst and learn about a process that is shaping the park we see today. Want to see an Eastern Bluebird? Sneak a peek at some Tree Swallow hatchlings? Our Bluebird Trail winds through fields and woods with homes for over 25 nesting pairs of birds. Join us as we check on who's in our nest boxes and monitor and record data on several bird species. Bring binoculars and be prepared to walk on uneven terrain. Program is free and open to all ages. Thacher Park's rocks and fossils record a time of abundant marine life in tropical seas, when New York was about 30 degrees south of the equator. Explore little known parts of Thacher Park and New York's ancient seas with Dr. Chuck Ver Straeten, New York State Museum. Be prepared for moderately strenuous hiking on and off trail. Doggy Day Stroll in Thacher Park

What is a Vernal Pond? at Thacher Park

Vernal ponds are ephemeral wetlands that fill with water from winter and spring rains, and usually dry out by the end of summer. We will explore a vernal pond that serves as an important breeding site for many obligate species, including the Yellow Spotted and Jefferson salamanders. Come try your hand at citizen science, and discover why vernal pools are known to be the coral reefs of the northeastern forest. Appropriate for ages 8 and older.
