Beginner Basket Weaving at Thacher Visitor Center

Learn to weave a basket with artisan and teacher Karin Kuck. Your finished basket will serve as a great introduction to weaving techniques that are the foundation of basket construction. You will leave with a useable 5" x 5" basket that you'll be proud to display in your home or give as a gift. The course fee of $40 includes all materials. Paint a serene river scene with local accomplished artist and teacher Karen Woodin. Participants of all skill levels will receive instructions on various oil painting techniques and complete their own 18 x 18 oil painting to take home. Course fee of $75 includes all materials. Sketching and Painting Bird Eggs and Nests at Thacher Nature Center

Capture the beauty of bird eggs and nests. With artist and educator Jean Mackay, you'll start with pencil to define basic shapes and forms and then use the color medium of your choice (colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, etc.) to add color and bring a nest to life. Some experience with drawing is helpful, but instruction will be tailored to various skill levels. Participants will provide their own materials. Instructor's fee is $30. Invite beautiful Bluebirds or mosquito-eating Tree Swallows into your yard! Our kits are pre-cut and pre-drilled, all hardware included. You will learn how to correctly place and monitor your nest box. This program is open to adults and children of all ages. Materials fee is $8. Among these twinkling stars, the pictures of the constellations appear; Ursa Major, Queen Cassiopeia, Orion the Hunter, Big Dog, and Little Dipper are among them. These are some of the cast of characters in Star Stories that were first told thousands of years ago. Join educator Chris Grubb and hear stories, learn how the stars move in a predictable pattern across the sky, and find out how to locate the constellations. Clifftop Walk at Thacher Park

Take in the views from the cliff edge on this early spring walk. We'll take the Long Path out to Hailes Cave and walk the escarpment trail back, stopping to take in a cliff top perspective of the Indian Ladder Trail and the rushing waters of Outlet and Mine Lot Falls. Walk is about 1.5 miles in length and is over fairly level terrain. Trail may be muddy in some places, and weather could be damp, so dress for conditions. We'll meet at the Visitor Center. This training will teach you to identify birds using the birdhouse or nest in your yard and how to monitor the progress of the nestlings. Learn how to obtain and record data and how to keep your baby birds safe from harm. We will go outside to try out your new skills and conduct nest box checks in our fields. Early Spring Wildflower Walk at Thacher Park

Woodland wildflowers known as spring ephemerals bloom on the forest floor before the trees leaf out and block the sun. The season is short, and the blooms of some delicate flowers can disappear in days. We'll look for early bloomers like hepatica, coltsfoot, trout lily, spring beauties, and bloodroot.
