Claire shares a fun, entertaining mixture of fairytales, legends and personal stories that have wide appeal for all ages. Bring a camp chair or blanket if you wish. S’mores fixin’s will be available. Join us for a fun and fascinating look at our honeybee observation hive! We’ll meet the querulous queen, the woebegone workers, and the dull drones, while learning about the various jobs they have within the colony. Observe up close the features of the hive, including the fabulous feeding port and the tubular TUBE. Try on the beekeeping equipment, and test your honeybee knowledge in a friendly trivia game! The Monarch butterfly, one of our most vibrant and recognizable species, is on the decline! Learn about the many challenges Monarchs face in their environment. Find out about the amazing conservation efforts taking place throughout the country, then visit a milkweed patch to learn about how this unique plant supports an array of insects, including the Monarch. Fossil Find Friday at Thacher Park

Brachiopods, Crinoids, and Bryozoans, oh my! Learn about these creatures and why their fossils can be found in Thacher Park. We will meet at the Visitor Center and take a walk to look for fossils both on and off trail. We will be observing only and not removing anything, as collecting is not allowed in the park. The Night Shift: Moths After Dark at Thacher Nature Center

After dark, a whole other community of animals becomes active. Come and see gorgeous moths and other nocturnal insects attracted to special lights. After a short introduction inside, head out to the moth lighting set-up with moth experts Catherine Klatt and Rebecca Allmond. Bring a flashlight, and be prepared for mosquitoes. You will probably be most comfortable with long pants and sleeves, and insect repellent. Call 518-872-0800 to register.

Thacher Park Overlook is a great place to watch for hawks flying south during their fall migration. Hawk Watch leader Will Aubrey will be on hand to answer questions, provide background material, compile statistics, and assist with hawk identification. Come see live raptors and learn about wildlife rehabilitation with Richele Ford. Refreshments will be available at the Overlook concession stand.
