The rocks of Thacher Park record the history of Earth, from the deep geologic past and from recent times. Ancient seas, modern and ancient earthquakes, and today's retreat of the Indian Ladder cliffs can be "read" from the pages of the rock layers. This training will teach you to identify the birds using the birdhouse or nest in your yard and how to monitor the progress of the nestlings. Learn how to obtain and record data and how to keep your baby birds safe from harm. We will go outside to try out your new skills and conduct nest box checks in our fields. Spring is the best time to enjoy waterfalls in the park. Rushing streams cascade down rocky slopes at Paint Mine and Hop Field, and flow off the cliff above the Indian Ladder Trail. The rocks beneath the water are the cause of all the drama. Come and explore the geology while you take in the beauty of the falls. We'll meet at the Paint Mine picnic area. Project 1:Picnic Tables assembly. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, snack, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers

Project 2:Replace and groom mulch for playground and playground areas. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, snack

Project 3:Installing a fence behind the campground garage. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, snack

Other projects: Highway clean up on Rte. 157 (ages 13 and up). Bring gloves. Stacking firewood at the campground. (bring gloves) Kayak rack assembly (gloves, hand tools)Staining kiosks in Paint Mine and Overlook sections (gloves)Trails clean up (gloves, sturdy shoes) Grounds clean up at Nature Center (gloves)All projects start at 9AM and end at 12:30PM and are appropriate for all ages EXCEPT the highway clean up

The rocks in Thacher Park were historically thought to be nicely layered. Recent discoveries show that the rocks are actually folded and faulted. Learn about how we are refining our understanding of the park's geology and how it serves as a transition between the geology to the west and that to the south. “What is a Vernal Pond?” at Thacher Park

Vernal ponds are ephemeral wetlands that fill with water from winter and spring rains, and usually dry out by the end of summer. We will explore a vernal pond that serves as an important breeding site for many obligate species, including the Yellow Spotted and Jefferson salamanders. Come try your hand at citizen science, and discover why vernal pools are known to be the coral reefs of the northeastern forest. Appropriate for ages 8 and older. We begin the series with a focus on trail etiquette as we experience the hemlock forest and walk near a wetland habitat on the Orange trail. The rating for this walk is Beginner at 1 mile in length. Mud, sand and shells record ancient Albany County history, long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Thacher Park's rocks and fossils record a time of abundant marine life in tropical seas, when New York was about 30 degrees south of the equator. Explore little known parts of Thacher Park and New York's ancient seas with Dr. Chuck Ver Straeten, New York State Museum. Be prepared for moderately strenuous hiking on and off trail. Want to see an Eastern Bluebird? Sneak a peek at some Tree Swallow hatchlings? Our Bluebird Trail winds through fields and woods with homes for over 25 nesting pairs of birds. Karst Geology Walk at Thacher Park

Much of the rock found in Thacher Park is limestone. Limestone can be dissolved through natural processes, giving rise to topography called karst. Features of karst topography include sinkholes and caves. On this walk we will see some fine examples of karst and learn about a process that is shaping the park we see today. Indian Ladder Trail Guided Walk at Thacher Park

Descend the cliff and learn about the geologic and cultural history of the Helderbergs on this scenic and historic trail. See underground streams, look for fossils and step inside the crevice cave along the trail. Trail is moderately rugged with stairclimbing and a couple of steep slopes. Come and check out who's swimming in Thompson's Lake with ecologist Dr. Doug Fraser.
