Indian Ladder Trail Guided Walk

Descend the cliff and learn about the geologic and cultural history of the Helderbergs on this scenic and historic trail. See underground streams, look for fossils and step inside the crevice cave along the trail. Trail is moderately rugged with stairclimbing and a couple of steep slopes. Wear sturdy shoes and meet at the Indian Ladder Trailhead behind the Visitor Center. Walk lasts about 1.5 hours. Call 872-0800 to register.

Join historian Tim Albright on a hike through time in the Helderbergs. Learn about the cultural history of the Indian Ladder Region, from early settlement by the Dutch in the 18th century to the creation of the park in the 20th century. Meet at the new Thacher Visitor Center for an introduction, and then head out for an easy walk sprinkled with interesting tales of days gone by. Call 872-0800 to register.

Landscape Oil Painting Workshop at Thacher Nature Center

In one lesson, create an atmospheric lake scene using oil paints on an 11 x 14 canvas. Instructor Karen Woodin will demonstrate how to apply, blend, and smooth your oil paints on a prepared canvas and teach techniques for creating an impressionistic style of mist, water and vegetation. Fee of $54 dollars includes all materials. Please bring a bag lunch. Light refreshments will be provided. Class level is beginner to intermediate, and appropriate for ages 16 and up. DEC Fisheries staff will teach program participants how to identify common sportfish, how to cast a spin-casting rod, bait a hook and fishing safety. After the fishing education portion of the program, everyone will get a fishing rod and have the opportunity to use the skills they just learned and go fishing.
