Lecture Series: Crime and Justice in Early Poughkeepsie
Sunday, October 27, 2019 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
(845) 834-2867

Join Dutchess County Historian Will Tatum at the Ulster Welcome Center (87 Haviland Road, Highland) for a journey through the Ancient Documents Collection, the surviving records of the Dutchess County Court from 1721 onwards. Learn about a variety of tales, from lawsuits over debt to disorderly taverns and the fear of slave insurrection. Find out how historians use old court records to recover the seedier side of daily life in early Poughkeepsie.

About the Lecturer: Will Tatum received his BA in History and Archaeology from the College of William & Mary in 2003 and his MA and PhD in History from Brown University in 2004 and 2016. He has served as the Dutchess County Historian since October 2012. In addition to designing exhibits, delivering presentations, and coordinating the county history community, Will oversees the county’s Ancient Documents Project, which is making the county’s early court records accessible to researchers.

This event is free for Walkway members. Nonmembers are invited to join us but asked to consider a $5 suggested donation.
