Join Naturalist and Wilderness Educator, Stephen Sciame of Blue Campfire Experiences LLC, for a ~2 mile walk around Swan Lake and surrounding areas and learn how to read the signs of nature to interpret animal movement and behavior. This includes not only their tracks, but also their droppings, feathers, nests and burrows, and things like rub marks on trees from deer antlers, holes in trees from woodpeckers, and even things you can't see- like their sounds! Learn how to use these observations to your advantage in a survival situation.

Meet at the Visitor's Center courtyard and bring water to drink. No dogs please. Rain date: November 14. Cost: $5 + Eventbrite fees. Maximum: 15 people.

If so, you will receive a cancelation email two hours before the scheduled walk. SUBJECT TO NY STATE COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS: Completed vaccinations are required to attend. Bring a mask in case of close contact with other visitors.

Please dress according to weather conditions and bring water. The Rockwood Hall parking lot is on Kendal Way at the west end of Route 117, just after the intersection of Phelps and Regeneron. If the lot is full, you may park in the Phelps garage (free). Cross Kendal Way to access the path that leads to the park. Gather at the kiosk at the top of the hill. We will leave ON TIME. Leashed dogs are welcome. In case of bad weather, the hike will be canceled (including overcast skies when we know there will be no visible sunset). You will be notified via email at least  2 hours in advance. Cost $3 + Eventbrite fees. Maximum: 40 people.

Every month we give hikers the opportunity to experience the Preserve after dark in our "Full Moon Hike" series. Join us for this very popular and special event! The hike will be about 4 miles. Please bring water, a flashlight or headlamp, and dress according to weather conditions. Leashed dogs are welcome. Meet at the Visitor's Center courtyard. In case of bad weather, the hike will be canceled. You will be notified via email at least 2 hours in advance. IMPORTANT: We leave promptly at scheduled times. This is a night hike, after the park has officially closed. Latecomers will not be allowed to enter the park after the group has departed.

Croton Reservoir & Dam Hike

Easy, small group, open-air 2 mile/2 hour (total) loop hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam. Meet near the restrooms at the rear (south end) of the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY. 10567, GPS Coordinates: 41°13′34"N 73°51′21"W (may be parking fee). The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply fresh water to a thirsty New York City. (From Metro-North Hudson Line Croton-Harmon Train Station: 15-minute taxi.)

Explore Olana's artist-designed landscape through the perspective of pollinators! Learn about how honeybees and humans can prepare for winter through a guided outdoor walk and workshop. During this program, beekeepers Chris and Lisa Layman will lead a guided outdoor walk and a short demo about making beeswax salves. Chris and Lisa run Fox Farm Apiary, a honeybee rescue and sanctuary in the Hudson Valley. In partnership with Olana, Fox Farm maintains an apiary onsite at Olana's farm complex. This program covers approximately 1/4 mile and will be conducted outside. $20 person/ $15 members (includes a throat spray sample from Fox Farm Apiary). Be a Citizen Scientist at Sam’s Point

When do the flowers bloom? When do the leaves fall? We are very curious to find out! Be a scientist for the day and help Sam's Point staff monitor seasonal changes in our plant communities. During this family program, we'll observe and identify blooming, fruiting, and budding native plants along a three-mile loop hike around Lake Maratanza. This program is recommended for adults and children over the age of eight, accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Participants should come prepared with water, snacks, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household. All visitors, regardless of vaccination status, are encouraged to wear a mask when inside buildings. Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling Sam's Point at 845-647-7989.

In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, join the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and the Group for the East End for a walk and clean-up along the Preserve's beach on Long Island Sound.  Along the way, we will look for signs of local wildlife and pick up debris before it can harm marine life.  Beach clean-up supplies will be provided, but it is recommended to bring your own gloves.
