Solomon Northup “Hope Out of Darkness” evening presentations at Victoria Pool House
Thursday, July 10, 2025 07:00 PM - 09:00 PM
Melissa Howell, Solomon Northup descendant and founder of
The Solomon Northup Legacy, presents Monument as Memory: Family, Art, and
the Living Legacy of Solomon Northup examining how public art can reclaim
stories nearly lost to history. Through the powerful presence of Hope Out of
Darkness, this presentation explores the role of monuments not just as
commemorations, but as active engagements with the past. It considers how
sculpture, narrative, and visual form can restore dignity, confront injustice,
and ensure that voices once silenced remain visible, heard, and enduring in our
public consciousness. NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Interpreter
of African American History Lavada Nahon presents The Impact of the Fugitive
Slave Acts on New York's Black Communities. Signed in 1793, by George
Washington, the first of two Fugitive Slave Acts entered US Federal Law. The
1850 Act raised the bar. While managing a range of challenges to their new free
status, New York's Black communities additionally faced increased pressure of
kidnapping and re-enslavement. In this presentation, Lavada Nahon, Interpreter
of African American History for NYS OPRHP shares a look at what the Fugitive
Slaves Acts did to New Yorkers as slavery grew outside of the state.
