An Ebony Hillbillies concert at Saratoga Music Hall (474 Broadway Saratoga Springs, NY 12866) is the final event of NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's Solomon Northup "Hope Out of Darkness" statue series. African American string bands were an essential part of daily life throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Its practitioners played for pleasure, for church, and to relieve the enormous stresses of life on the plantation. String bands served as an early melting pot for musical and creative integration of Africans, African Americans and Native Americans, with influences by Scottish, Irish and other European immigrants.
