Grape Growing Breeding, & Winemaking in the Hudson Highlands

Thursday, April 10, 2025 07:00 PM - 09:00 PM

From 1840 to 1900, the Hudson Highlands was one of the premier grape growing and breeding areas of the United States and Europe. Locally bred grape varieties such as Iona, Croton, Empire State, & Dutchess were grown here for wine production and for table consumption in New York City. This talk will cover the lives & work of local 19th Century grape & other fruit breeders such as Dr. Charles W. Grant of Iona Island, The Underhill Family of Croton Point, James Ricketts of Newburgh. We will also discuss the resultant grapes that these fruit breeding pioneers developed and how they were grown and made into wine in the Hudson Highlands. The speaker, J. Stephen Casscles is the author of the book Grapes of the Hudson Valley, whose family lived and continues to live in the Hudson Highlands. Book Sale and Signing after the talk.
