PARKS COMMISSIONER TO PRESENT PRESERVATION AWARDS ON MAY 2 IN ITHACA

(Albany, New York, April 20, 1998...) New York State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro will announce the annual New York State Preservation Awards during the annual meeting of the Preservation League of New York State on Saturday, May 2, in Ithaca.

Each year, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recognizes excellence in the field of historic preservation. Commissioner Castro has selected five preservation projects for this year's awards.

"New York has one of the most active historic preservation programs in the country and we are proud of these accomplishments," said Governor Pataki. "I encourage all New Yorkers to join me and Commissioner Castro in celebrating this year's inspiring award winners."

Commissioner Castro said the 1998 awards include: the striking rehabilitation of the Newburgh Armory in Newburgh; the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation's carefully-managed Birch Avenue archeology project in Lake George; the revitalization of Hubbard Hall in Elizabethtown; the cultural landscape report for the Lorenzo State Historic Site in Cazenovia; and the Maplewood Historic District partnership project in Rochester.

"This year's awards demonstrate that historic preservation can be a successful and cost effective tool for local, regional, and statewide tourism and community revitalization efforts," said Commissioner Castro.
