STATE PARKS COMMISSIONER APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR FOR THOUSAND ISLANDS PARK REGION

(Albany, New York, April 20, 1998...) New York State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro today announced the appointment of Watertown resident Stephen P. Lyman as the director of the Thousands Islands State Park Region.

"We are so proud to have Stephen joining us and are confident he will do an outstanding job in managing our 24 state parks and two historic sites in the beautiful Thousand Islands region," said Commissioner Castro.

A 1973 graduate of LeMoyne College, Lyman worked in the Jefferson County Social Services Department for 23 years, most recently as commissioner.

"These are days when so many things are happening around New York State, under the leadership of Governor Pataki, that it is an honor to be able to join state government," said Lyman. "I am especially appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of our system of parks and historic sites -- treasures of which we can truly be proud. Commissioner Castro's goals to make our parks clean, safe and enjoyable, and to develop partnerships with the private sector that help sustain and nurture our heritage, provide a clear and compelling definition of the work that lies ahead."

Lyman serves on several community groups and was appointed last year to serve on the Governor's Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

"I commend Commissioner Castro for her choice of Steve Lyman who will be an excellent regional director," said Senator Jim Wright. "I had the pleasure of working with Steve while he was county commissioner of social services and I was always impressed by his professionalism and commitment to serving the public interest. I look forward to working with him in state service. He will serve the State of New York well."
