Lifeguard Recruitment Effort Underway to Staff State Beaches and Pools and Ensure Safe Swimming Spots

Governor Hochul's ‘You're Hired' Initiative Recruits Talented Public Sector Workers for New York State Service

As part of New York State's hiring drive, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is ready to hire lifeguards for the 2025 swimming season. Lifeguarding is great for both experienced swimmers and for younger students looking to gain job experience – all while enjoying the summer months. Information and a complete schedule of qualifying exams are posted on the agency website.

"All across our vast state, we depend on our dedicated New York State Park lifeguards as they play a critical role in protecting millions of patrons at our beaches and pools each year," said State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore Randy Simons. "This vital role in our parks not only offers an excellent opportunity to stay active, earn income and gain valuable experience, but allows individuals to serve the public. We're proud to offer this opportunity and to provide our patrons with well-trained lifeguards throughout the summer and beyond, helping to create a safe and enjoyable experience for all."

There are 1,100 lifeguard positions available at 70 New York State Park beaches and pools. Starting pay begins at $21.86 per hour depending on the region. Pay rates increase for lifeguards with more experience. State Parks is holding lifeguard qualifiers and has a lifeguard digital recruitment campaign through social media platforms. Lifeguard candidates for non-Long Island facilities may qualify at any of the scheduled sites. The new hiring procedures for Long Island lifeguard candidates is scheduled for June 8.

Lifeguards must meet certain eligibility criteria, which includes successfully completing the qualifying procedure before being receiving a conditional offer of employment. For a current schedule of qualifying dates, more information about hiring requirements, and an application, visit here. New qualifying dates will be added on a rolling basis. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. If you have any questions, please reach out to lifeguard@parks.ny.gov and specify region or park.
