STATE PARKS COMMISSIONER ANNOUNCES $1 MILLION IN DEVELOPMENT AT WILSON TUSCARORA STATE PARK

(Albany, New York May 26, 1998 ...) New York State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro today announced more than $1 million in infrastructure improvements at Wilson Tuscarora State Park on Lake Ontario in the Town of Wilson, Niagara County.

"We have made great strides in acquiring thousands of acres of open space for the development of new state parks, but it's important that we also work to upgrade and improve what we already have," said Commissioner Castro. "This is a great example of that, as we have made a commitment to expand recreational and outdoor activities at Wilson Tuscarora."

Commissioner Castro said the $1.019 million project at the 390-acre state park includes the construction of a beach bathhouse and support facilities, roadways, parking areas, infrastructure improvements and a maintenance center. Construction should be completed by November.

"The master plan for Wilson Tuscarora identifies the need to further develop recreational opportunities at the park and with this project, we are meeting this demand," said Commissioner Castro. "We want to provide people on the Niagara Frontier with the best outdoor recreation we can offer. This development at Wilson Tuscarora will provide new opportunities and attract new visitors."

Commissioner Castro said the partially developed park currently offers a boat launch, restrooms, fishing areas, trails and a playground. A full swimming program is expected to begin in the summer of 1999.

Contracts have been awarded to: Smith Brothers, general construction, $764,400; Goodwin Electric, $73,290; T. Horace Seager, plumbing, $154,900; and Capital Heat, $26,880.
