PARKS COMMISSIONER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS TO STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD

(Albany, New York, March 27, 1998...) New York State Parks Commissioner and State Historic Preservation Officer Bernadette Castro has announced three appointments to the New York State Board for Historic Preservation.

Appointed to four-year terms were New York City resident Arete Swartz Warren and Buchanan resident Joseph J. Ryan. Re-appointed to a four-year term was Peekskill resident Frank Emile Sanchis III.

Warren, a freelance writer, is a lecturer on art and architectural history who has served on numerous regional, national and international boards and organizations. Ryan has spent more than 25 years perfecting his "living history" social studies courses at Blue Mountain Middle School in Montrose and at the College of New Rochelle as an adjunct professor. Sanchis serves as a vice-president with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

"I cannot think of three better New Yorkers to serve the citizens of our great state as members of the state Board for Historic Preservation," said Commissioner Castro. "Between them they bring diverse experience, scholarship and old-fashioned common sense to the important deliberations of this body."

The main responsibilities of the 13-member board are to review and recommend the nomination of properties of national, state or local significance for inclusion on the National or State Register and offer advice on policy matters affecting historic preservation and historic sites. The board meets four times each year and is chaired by Dr. Robert MacKay.

Appointments to the historic preservation board are made by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. The Senate confirmed these appointments on March 17.
