EMPIRE STATE SENIOR GAMES WILL MOVE ITS COMPETITION DATES NEXT YEAR

(Syracuse, New York, November 16, 1998 ...) State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro today announced the Empire State Senior Games will move its competition dates next year in Syracuse avoid conflicting with the State Games for the Physically Challenged.

Castro said the dates for the 1999 Senior Games will be June 17-20. Traditionally, the Senior Games have been held on the first weekend in June each year.

As a result of the move, some improvements are being made in competition and social venues for the event which draws more than 1,600 senior athletes annually. The LeMoyne College campus in Syracuse has been selected as the new home for games registration, social events, lodging and many of the competitions.

"The consolidated small campus atmosphere and the ability to host so much of the activity directly at the college makes it the perfect match for senior competitors," said Commissioner Castro. "We are delighted that LeMoyne College has agreed to host our Senior Games and we are confident the participants will find this setting much to their liking."

The Empire State Senior Games are sponsored by the state Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation with assistance from the State Office for Aging. Lead sponsors for the event include the New York State Lottery and Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation.

Participation is open to all residents 50 years of age or older. Information can be obtained by calling the Senior Games office at (315) 492-9654.
