STATE PARKS SETS OPENING DATES FOR CAMPSITES, CABINS, ANNOUNCES NEW CONFIRMATION PLAN FOR RESERVATIONS

(Albany, New York, April 8, 1998...) Governor George E. Pataki and State Parks Commissioner Bernadette Castro today announced the campsite and cabin opening dates for the 1998 camping season at state parks.

"We offer an astonishing variety of camping experiences, from Hither Hills State Park's campground on the Atlantic to Letchworth State Park's campsites overlooking the valleys of the Genesee Gorge, to the peaceful campsites on the island parks in the St. Lawrence River," said Governor Pataki. "I encourage our residents and visitors to experience everything we have to offer within our great state parks system."

"Campers can swim beneath a waterfall in Robert H. Treman State Park, hike or ride horseback on the scenic Allegany State Park trails, even play a round or two of golf at the Dinsmore course in Mills-Norrie State Park along the Hudson," said Commissioner Castro. "No state park system in the country has as much to offer campers as New York's."

Commissioner Castro said she has also worked with officials at Park.Net, the state's New York-based camping reservation service, to begin offering confirmation letters to those who reserve a site at a New York State Parks operated facility using the toll-free service.

"In an effort to improve customer service, we have worked with Park.Net to begin providing confirmation letters to serve as a receipt for those making reservations at one of our state parks using the toll-free service," said Commissioner Castro, who noted reservations were up 17 percent in 1997, the first year of Park.Net's five year contract with the state.

In November 1996, Governor Pataki chose Park.Net, a Ballston Spa-based company, to run New York's campground reservation service, bringing more than 100 new jobs from California to the Capital Region.

Reservation are recommended to ensure accommodations at any state-run camping area. To reserve a cabin or campsite, call 1-800-456-CAMP. Park.Net's web site, www.park-net.com, also provides camping information and reservation services. The basic campsite rental fee is $13 per night. Cabin rental fees vary from $92 to $325 per week, depending on location, size and amenities.
