State Parks Announces 2009-10 Operating Schedule Changes for the Genesee Region

Park Patrons Urged to Take Note of Changes in Hours for Swimming, Campgrounds

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation today announced changes in the 2009-10 operating schedules at a number of parks and historic sites in the Genesee Region. The changes reflect a reduction in state spending at parks and historic sites.

"State Parks, like all state agencies, is responding to the current economic realities. We have been charged with making many difficult decisions and the changes we announce today are among them," said Commissioner Carol Ash.

"By concentrating the changes to the shoulder seasons, off-peak hours or facilities where similar services are available nearby, we hope to minimize the impact on our patrons," said Ash.

While approximately 100 parks and historic sites across the state will see some reduction in services, Ash noted that no parks have been closed in full, and the daily entrance fee to the parks is unchanged. In addition, a number of changes coincide with park repair and rehabilitation projects.

Changes for the Genesee Region are outlined below.

  • Conesus and Silver Lake Boat Launches: Open late (May 1) and not staffed after Labor Day.
  • Darien Lakes State Park: Campground opens late (May 15) and close early (Columbus Day). Swimming beach will open late (June 20). During the winter, restroom closed and minimal snow plowing.
  • Hamlin Beach State Park: Campgrounds open late (May 15) and close early (October 13). One of two swimming beaches closed for 2009. Picnic shelters and restrooms will close early in the fall.
  • Lakeside Beach State Park and Oak Orchard Boat Launch: Campgrounds and boat launch open late (May 15). Boat Launch not staffed after Labor Day and Campground closes early (October 13).
  • Letchworth: Most campgrounds and cabins open late (May 15) and close early (phased closings Labor Day to late October). The South swimming pool remains closed (the Harvey (north) swimming pool remains open seven days / week). Selected restrooms and picnic shelters close early in fall. During the winter, roadway and parking area plowing and cross-country and snowmobile trail grooming will be reduced.
