Advisory: Campground Openings Suspended at Cumberland Bay and Mary Island State Parks Due to Storm Damage

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that recent storm damage has forced changes in the camping schedules at two North Country State Parks. Parks officials are taking steps to accommodate affected campers at nearby parks.

Cumberland Bay State Park in Clinton County: Due to recent flooding, the Cumberland Bay campground's scheduled opening date will be postponed from May 13 to May 25, 2011. As an alternative camping location, State Parks suggests Macomb Reservation State Park, located just 12 miles from Cumberland Bay. Macomb Reservation will open ahead of schedule on May 13, 2011 to accommodate campers.

ReserveAmerica, which operates State Parks' camping reservation system has contacted 37 customers with Cumberland Bay reservations notifying them of the situation and cancellation of their stay and will issue a full refund.

Mary Island State Park in Jefferson County: As a result of structural damage to the Park's water and electrical systems, camping has been indefinitely suspended at Mary Island State Park. State Park suggests Canoe-Picnic Point State Park or Cedar Island State Park, both accessible only by boat, as alternative camping locations.

Mary Island will be open for day-use, but the opening date has yet to be determined. Mary Island, a 12-site campground accessible only by boat, was scheduled to open May 27.

Park staff will contact the five customers with existing reservations to determine if they would like to transfer their reservation to another park. Otherwise, full refunds will be issued.

Camping reservations are available through ReserveAmerica, which provides online and phone reservations for campsites throughout New York. Reservations are accepted for campsites and cabins, from one day to nine months in advance of the planned arrival date by calling toll free 1-800-456-CAMP or online www.ReserveAmerica.com.
