Pet Policy

A maximum of two pets are allowed in campsites and day use areas unless prohibited by sign or directive. Pets are to be supervised at all times and either be crated or on a leash not more than 6-feet in length. Proof of rabies inoculation shall be produced if requested by staff. Pets are not permitted in playgrounds, buildings, golf courses, boardwalks, pools and spray-grounds or guarded beaches (this does not apply to service animals).

Cherry Plain State Park has 175 acres and features a day use picnic area on Black River Pond, with a public restroom nearby. The park also has a boat launch, bridle paths and hiking, biking and nature trails that serve for cross-country skiing in the winter. Anglers fish for bass, bullheads and pickerel and may also ice fish in winter.

The park has 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites as well as 10 "hike-in" tent sites available for overnight camping.

Pavilion Information
Cherry Plain has two pavilions/tents. Prices range from $75 to $100 and can accommodate 80 to 100 people. Check availability at ReserveAmerica.com.

Fees & Rates

Most New York State Parks charge a vehicle use fee to enter the facility. Fees vary by location and season. A list of entry fees and other park use fees is available below. For fees not listed or to verify information, please contact the park directly.

The easy-to-use Empire Pass card is $80- and your key to all-season enjoyment with unlimited day-use entry at most facilities operated by State Parks and the State Dept. of Environmental Conservation including forests, beaches, trails and more.   • $6 per vehicle for day use (vehicle entrance fees are included with camping) 
    $35 per non-profit group bus 
    $75 per commercial bus

  • Deposit of $20, plus a form of ID is required for each boat.
    Rowboats - $5 per hour
    Kayaks - $4 per half hour

  • Pavilion/Tent
  • Pavilion/tent rentals are available for reservation from Memorial Day weekend through June 28th, weekends only (including Memorial Day Monday). They are available daily from June 28th through Labor Day. Go to ReserveAmerica.com to book a location.

Deer and small game hunting are allowed in season. Park hunting permit dates are September 1st to August 31st to cover the NYS DEC hunting permit dates.


A valid hunting license is required to obtain a park hunting permit.


Hunting Permit Procedure for Grafton Lakes, Cherry Plain and Bennington Battlefield
  • Complete and sign the hunting permit (PDF provided) – if you are submitting via email the permit must be scanned as a document, no pictures of the permit will be accepted.
  • Provide a copy of your current hunting license
  • Submit your permit and hunting license to the park office via email (graftonlakesadmin@parks.ny.gov) or mail to P.O. Box 163, Grafton, NY 12082.

Once we receive all the necessary documents, we will issue a new permit and return it to you.

*Hunting is not permitted within 500 feet of any building, road, playground, or parking lot, and all trails are considered safety zones where hunting is not allowed.
