Join Douglas Bassett to different spots each week near the HNC as unique individual giants spanning 200 to 300 years in age are pointed out and enjoyed up close as we learn about the hidden life of trees and old growth ecosystems. Bring a lunch. (2 hours) Weekly (see calendar) at 11:00am.

Meet Wednesdays (except as noted) at 10am (4 hours, 2 miles). Letchworth State Park has over fifty miles of boundary line that traverses many scenic hills and dales. Ten miles in five sessions will be explored. Long pants, sturdy footwear (for mud, prickers, poison ivy and stream crossings) and packed lunch or snacks are all recommended. Car-pooling is required.

Home Ecologist is a program geared towards home school families with children ages 6-12. Now offering one program per month for families with children ages 12+. Each month will focus on a different theme. Programs are free of charge, and pre-registration is not required but appreciated. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the entire program.

Beginners and “birders” alike will be led on short walks near the HNC to find the increasing number of returning birds of the spring. Binoculars will be available to borrow. Meet Saturdays at 9:00am in May and June (1.5 hours).

Spring is the time when fawns are born and begin to expand their world. We will explore the woods from a fawn's point of view, and find one if we're lucky! Saturdays at 1pm in May and June (1.5 hours).

Nature Up Close- Butterfly Beauties at the Humphrey Nature Center

Study the beauty and composition of hundreds of dried butterfly specimens representing most of the world's butterly families. Dozens of local and New York species, as well as those found in the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory, are specially noted. Butterfly structure and local natural history will be featured in two new butterfly videos. This is an excellent primer for the Butterfly Walk on July 7th.

The Knee-High Naturalists program is designed to allow children ages 3 – 6 (must be accompanied by an adult) to explore the natural world. Themes change with each program, and activities may include storybook reading, crafts, or a short nature walk. Registration appreciated by calling (585) 493-3680. This program will generally be held every other Monday (April 2 – June 18), from 10:30am – 11:15am in the HNC
