19th Century Military Medicine in Oswego
Monday, September 8, 2025 12:30 PM - 02:00 PM
Danielle Funiciello will present her interactive program on 19th Century military medicine at Lorenzo. Dressed in the garb of Oswego-local Dr. Mary Walker, the only female US Medal of Honor recipient to date, Danielle will discuss medicine as it was practiced during and after the Civil War. She will share Dr. Walker's tenure as a surgeon in the American Civil War; roles and tasks within the Army Medical Department through the lens of the Veteran's Reserve Corps stationed at Fort Ontario from 1868-69; and some interesting anecdotes about the advancement of medicine during the 1800's. Questions will be encouraged, and she will be bringing reproduction medical equipment to see and some to touch! Danielle Funiciello is the Interpretive Programs Assistant at Fort Ontario State Historic Site, holds her MA in Public History from University of Albany SUNY and is currently a PhD Candidate in History at the same institution. This event is "admission free".
