Birding Across the Old Orchard at Minnewaska

Join Elizabeth Axley, Student Conservation Association/AmeriCorps Member, on a leisurely hike to identify the many wonderous birds of Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Participants can expect to primarily see wood-warblers and other songbirds on this trip. All levels of birdwatching experience are welcome — Elizabeth will help guide your identification of all birds seen. This adventure will take place on an approximately two-mile loop starting on the Upper Awosting Carriage Road, traversing the Old Orchard on a footpath, continuing along the Castle Point Carriage Road and finishing on the Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road. Meet at the Minnewaska Nature Center. If you need to borrow binoculars for this event, please reserve them in advance when you register. Pre-registration is required by calling Minnewaska at 845-255-0752.

Come to the Minnewaska Nature Center on Labor Day to learn how to reduce your carbon footprint by eliminating trash, especially the huge amounts of waste generated from single-use plastics. Engage in fun activities for all ages to estimate your volume of trash per year, to understand the impact of landfills on our environment, and to see where changing your habits may make a big difference. We will provide you with resources to help you not only reduce the amount of trash you generate, but to even become waste-free, a challenging but rewarding endeavor. Finally, become educated on local legislative action in both Ulster County and New York State in waste reduction, and learn how you can make your voice heard on these issues. Pre-registration is NOT required.

Enjoy a two-hour walk led by Ron Conzo of the Rockland Audubon Society in search of neo-tropical birds on their migration. First time birders welcome! Experienced birders will enjoy exploring diverse habitats including; brackish river and marsh, fresh water pond, meadows, lawn and woodland areas.

Bring binoculars, or borrow an extra pair from the group. Wear sturdy shoes or boots.
