Foraging Edible Invasives
Sunday, April 30, 2023 01:00 PM - 02:30 PM
Rockefeller State Park Preserve
If you can't beat ‘em, eat ‘em! Non-native plants are typically regarded as pests and are removed and discarded as waste, but what if we were to rewrite this narrative and view them as a source of food instead? Join naturalist, Greg Rosen, for an introduction to the basics of gathering edible "invasive" plants. The first of a three-part series, this program will cover the basics of foraging with an emphasis on ecological relationships and responsible practices. We'll walk, talk, and observe in the field so please wear comfortable closed-toed shoes. Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3, which will provide additional perspectives on the matter, i.e. from a culinary and herbalist standpoint. Cost: $4. Max: 15 people. PLEASE NOTE: foraging or collecting specimens for any purpose is prohibited in the Preserve. This includes plants, seeds, wildlife, rocks, etc. This is a unique opportunity to learn about foraging under the guidance of an expert.
