Adult Learning Summer Series: Field Guide Creation at Minnewaska
Monday, July 29, 2024 09:30 AM - 01:00 PM
Minnewaska State Park Preserve
Field guides are excellent tools that blend the areas of art and science to create a deeper understanding of the world around you. On this three-mile outing, we will be focusing on how to create entries in a field guide, which can be used to help identify plants and animals at Minnewaska. Josh Grosse, Student Conservation Association/AmeriCorps Environmental Educator, will help walk you through the steps of making entries in your own field guide, from taking measurements of the subject to making a drawing. Blank guides, measurement tools, and drawing materials will be provided by Minnewaska before we embark on the hike. Starting from the Lower Parking Lot, we will follow the entire length of the Mossy Glen Footpath, which is lined with abundant mountain laurel and follows the edges of the babbling Peter's Kill stream. Along the way, we will make a few stops to create entries in our guides. Please note that the footpath includes some tricky footing and may be slippery in some places. Participants should come prepared with appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and food to sustain themselves. Participants are also encouraged (but not required) to download the "Seek" iNaturalist app – a helpful digital tool for identifying plant and animal species using your phone's camera– before coming to this program. At the conclusion of this trail, we will take Blueberry Run Footpath until it intersects with Lower Awosting Carriage Road. We'll continue our walk on this easy-going carriage road until we arrive back at the parking lot. The footpath sections of this hike include uneven and rocky footing and some potentially slippery rocks and mud, which may be difficult for some. Meet at the Lower Parking Area. Junior Naturalists for Families at Sam’s Point: Hike to the Ice Caves
Wednesday, August 7, 2024 09:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam's Point Area
(845) 647-7989

Join Colleen Stevens, Student Conservation Association/AmeriCorp Environmental Educator, for an adventurous hike to the Ice Caves at Sam's Point, where the air is always a comfortable 55 degrees Fahrenheit, even during the height of the summer heat. This nearly four-mile hike includes one steep hill on a carriage road, but the reward of walking through the cool, dark, talus cave is worth the effort. While in the cave, educators will explain the geology of this unique natural area and why it's so special. The footpath section of this outing does include two primitive ladders and a steep stone staircase, which some may find challenging. Plan to bring food and lots of water and we'll have lunch on the trail. This program is recommended for families of all ages who are capable of hiking this distance and terrain. Meet at the Sam's Point Visitor Center. Pre-registration is required by calling the Sam's Point Visitor Center at 845-647-7989.

Walkway Talks: The Brainchild of Harvey Eastman
Sunday, August 18, 2024 02:30 PM - 03:30 PM
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
Meet at East Gate Plaza, Poughkeepsie. This presentation will tell the story of how the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was the brainchild of Mayor Harvey Eastman and how that idea finally came to fruition in the late 1800s. It deals with Eastman's vision and the roadblocks he faced, and the laying of the cornerstone, which was a huge event for the time. The delay and eventual building of the bridge will be discussed as well as the final abandonment and rebuild. Finally, Jim will talk about his novel, The Poughkeepsie Murder, and its connection to the Walkway. Presented by James Bennett BFA, MFA, a Poughkeepsie artist and author. He has written over 30 books including two novels which incorporate local history and important landmarks. This event is free to attend and open to all.
