Fire Tower Hike

Grafton Lakes State Park

Trek to the restored historic Grafton Fire Tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the Rensselaer Plateau, Taconics, and more from the top of the tower. This will be a strenuous 5-mile hike along trails and an old road, with one moderate ascent (minimum age of 14). If snow is on the ground, crampons, microspikes, or snowshoes are recommended. The hike is led by Nick Conrad, one of the Board of Directors and Past President of the Rensselaer Land Trust. He has led many hikes for the Land Trust, including at Grafton Lakes State Park.

Snowshoe Hike

Join the Taconic Hiking Club on a snowshoe around Shaver Pond. We will include a side trip on the Granville Hicks trail to see the West Family cemetery, dating from the early 1800's and the Granville Hick's Cemetery and return on the Hick's Beltway. Distance almost 2.5 miles. We will either need snowshoes or traction devices such as micro-spikes. Bring both, we will decide which we need for the conditions that day. Dress in layers. The planned route may be changed due to conditions that day.

The Great Backyard Bird Count Walk

Every year the Cornell Lab of Ornithology along with the National Audubon Society encourages bird counts at this time to tally wintering bird populations. Scientists use this data to help understand where populations of birds are in winter, etc. It is a very successful citizen science project so all birds seen here that day are recorded into databases. 3 mile walk.

Each nature snowshoe walk meets at the Humphrey Nature Center and will consist of a review of snowshoe types before exploring a mile or so of winter wonderland. These snowshoe walks will be nature walks if the snow does not provide adequate snow depth. We also have some snowshoes that may be borrowed. Adventure Nature Ski Hike

On Sunday at 10 am, January 23, a three or four mile ski hike for the advanced skier will meet at Trailside Lodge. Skiers will be following a variety of sections of the 15-mile ski trail system that is bounded by Pine Pond, Castile Entrance, Cabin Area B and Inspiration Point with views of the Great Bend Gorge and Portage Canyon. If adequate ski conditions do not exist, a two-mile nature hike will replace the ski hike.

On Sunday at 10 am, January 23, a three or four mile ski hike for the advanced skier will meet at Trailside Lodge. Skiers will be following a variety of sections of the 15-mile ski trail system that is bounded by Pine Pond, Castile Entrance, Cabin Area B and Inspiration Point with views of the Great Bend Gorge and Portage Canyon. If adequate ski conditions do not exist, a two-mile nature hike will replace the ski hike.

Join Nick Martin, Park Educator, for a snowshoe hike in the woods of the Peter's Kill Area of Minnewaska. During this approximately two-mile recreational program, we will snowshoe the various footpaths in the Peter's Kill Area to make one big loop. Departing from the parking area, this outing will take participants on the Red Loop, Bullwheel, High Peter's Kill and Yellow Connector Footpaths, returning on the Red Loop Footpath. While the distance of this outing is relatively short, there a few sustained uphills, downhills, and rocky terrain that some may find challenging. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the Education Department. Please plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m. if you will be borrowing snowshoes. If there is insufficient snow cover, this program will be offered as a hike and participants are highly encouraged to bring along microspikes. All visitors, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask when inside buildings. All unvaccinated participants are encouraged to wear face coverings and keep a minimum six-foot distance away from others who are not part of their immediate household when outside. From here, we'll take a short section of Blueberry Run to Lower Awosting Carriage Road, which will take us back to our starting point. While scenic views are limited on this outing, it traverses beautiful sections of forest and two thin, clear mountain streams. The best prescription to cure cabin fever is to get outside and enjoy the wonders of winter. Get a taste of the cure and come join Laura Conner, Environmental Educator, for an approximately two-and-a-half mile-long snowshoe walk along the charming Awosting Falls Carriage Road. Leaving from the Peter's Kill Area, our route will take us on a slight uphill grade past a towering rock formation and along the Peter's Kill stream, before reaching our destination, the iconic 65-foot tall Awosting Falls. This program is recommended for physically fit adults and children older than eight years old. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. A limited number of snowshoes are available for participants to borrow for this program from the Education Department. Otherwise, snowshoes may be rented for this program from the Park Preserve for a fee. Please plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m. if you will be borrowing snowshoes. Hike to Indian Rock at Sam’s Point

Join Sam's Point Staff for an interpretive hike to Indian Rock. We'll hike past the scenic vista at the Sam's Point Overlook and then make our way around Lake Maratanza. At Indian Rock, we'll enjoy beautiful views of the Catskill Mountains. During this almost five-mile hike, we'll traverse woods, roads and a rocky footpath featuring a bog bridge. Most of the terrain is fairly level with some short, steep sections. Please bring a lunch, water, and appropriate clothing for the weather. If enough snow is present, participants are welcome to use snowshoes. Snowshoes are available for rent at the Sam's Point Visitor Center at the rate of $5 per person for the program. Early arrival is requested for snowshoe rental. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18. Meandering among the Mansions of the Historic Millionaires

Take an after-lunch stroll on the Aqueduct Trail. Meet at Irvington's Town Hall at 85 Main Street, less than ½ mile east up Main Street from the Irvington Metro-North train station. Visit the Tiffany Reading Room, one of a handful of Tiffany interiors. Meander north on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail (which intersects with Main Street) to Lyndhurst and back, admiring architectural landmarks, including the skeletal remains of a Lord & Burnham conservatory, and Hudson River views. Learn the history of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the millionaires who lived along the Trail in the 1800's. Four miles and 3-4 hours. When you return to Main Street, if you would like to see more, you may choose to continue your walk south (and back) on the Aqueduct to view more historic mansions.

Easy, small group, open-air 2 mile/2 hour (total) loop hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam. Meet near the restrooms at the rear (south end) of the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY. 10567, GPS Coordinates: 41°13′34"N 73°51′21"W . The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply fresh water to a thirsty New York City. (From Metro-North Hudson Line Croton-Harmon Train Station: 15-minute taxi.)

IMPORTANT: We leave promptly at scheduled times. This is a night hike, after the park has officially closed. Latecomers will not be allowed to join after the group has departed.
