Harmonies on the Hudson Concert Series featuring Sova
Thursday, August 28, 2025 06:00 PM - 07:30 PM
Clermont State Historic Site
Free For Sova — the stage name of New York-based pianist/composer Sophia Subbayya Vastek — the piano has always been home. A second-generation pianist, she holds a deep reverence for her collective history, coupled with an exploratory ear, and moves quietly between musical worlds. Over the years, her intuitive playing style — rooted in tenderness, improvisation, and classical training — has evolved into a dynamic, cinematic sound. Described as performing with "passion and profound tenderness" (Second Inversion) and "serene strokes and lyrical beauty" (Brooklyn Rail), her music is quietly devastating, blossoming into ambient-inspired soundscapes that range from whisper-soft echoes to expressive cascades. Please note: All Harmonies on the Hudson concerts are weather permitting. Check out the whole season's concert calendar at

Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site
(518) 860-9094
Join us for a lecture by White Creek Town Historian Ted
Rice. Mr. Rice has researched the lives of several inhabitants living near the
site of the Battle of Bennington in 1777. Drawing from his original research,
the lives of these men, some who fought and some who did not, will be placed in
context. Why did some find British rule agreeable while others found it to be
intolerable? From ardent royalists eager to put a stop to the chaos of
rebellion to Quakers wrestling with their consciences and everything in
between, these men came from all walks of life and had their lives touched by a
battle fought on their doorstep. Space is limited, RSVP to David Pitlyk today! david.pitlyk@parks.ny.gov //

Becoming Solomon Northup
Wednesday, September 3, 2025 07:00 PM - 08:00 PM
Saratoga Spa State Park
Upon starting a job with the Bureau of Historic Sites for
NYS as a photographer, Clifford Oliver Mealy moved to Greenwich in Washington
County in 1992. He walked into the local library where he was handed a
first edition from the reference collection of 12 Years a Slave by
Solomon Northup. He could not put it down. It was then he realized he not only
didn't know anything about history, he didn't know anything about his own
history. He took up the mantle interpreting Northup and 25 years later is known
throughout the state for his thoughtful, soulful, and empathetic portrayal.
Mealy will discuss Northup's life before and after the abduction and the
lessons he has learned from becoming Solomon Northup. The presentation is part
of OPRHP's Solomon Northup "Hope Out of Darkness" statue
series. The sculpture is on display in front of the Lincoln Bathhouse at
Saratoga Spa State Park until Oct. 7, 2025. Accessibility Note: Due to its historic nature, the
Victoria Pool House has steps leading into the space. A ramp is located at the
58 Roosevelt Bar and Grill entrance, but a single stair leads into the Victoria
Pool House room.

Lecture: “The Barbados-New York Connection: Enslavement and Exchange in the Middle Colonies, 1651-1750”
Wednesday, September 10, 2025 07:00 PM - 08:00 PM
Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site
The historical connection between Barbados and New York shaped the colonial landscape in the 17th and 18th centuries. Barbadian planters were central to the establishment of provisioning plantations in mid-seventeenth century New York and New Jersey. These wealthy landholders, in the attempt to feed and supply their Barbados sugar plantations, brought with them the practice of matrilineal enslavement to the region. At the same time, the Anglo-Dutch planters of the Hudson Valley developed economic and social ties to the sugar producing island. The bond between the two regions, and the complex flow of grown and manufactured goods as well as enslaved Africans is crucial to comprehending the centuries-long ties between these colonial spaces. Dr. Seth Kamil delves into the nature of the inter-colonial exchange and the shared places that define the Barbados-New York connection. This virtual program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Register at
