First Day Hike

Allegany State Park - Quaker Area
Get your New Year off to a great start with a hike along the new Quaker Run Area Multi-Use trail. The Quaker Run Area is where Allegany State Park was born 101 years ago, and this year's "First Day History Hike" is an easy trek featuring 20 historical tidbits of information about the features that can be found in this area of the park. The Quaker Store Museum will be open for this special event. The Friends of Allegany State Park will provide hot dogs and chips from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Camp Turner. Dress for the weather and be sure to wear appropriate footwear and/or snowshoes. Allegany State Park - Quaker Area
Next Level Mountain Biking will be leading a ride in the Red House area. Meet at the Administration Building at 11:00 AM on January 1, 2023. The pace and the length of the ride will be moderate and be determined by the participants. No one will be left behind. Participants may split into different paced groups, if necessary. Fat bikes are suggested, given the range of conditions likely to be present, however, use your best judgement for the conditions of the day. Grab your bike and some friends to join Allegany staff and Western New York Mountain Bike Association (WNYMBA) members for the last ride of the year. Bring lights, wear warm and reflective gear and a helmet. No one will be left behind. Participants may be split into different paced groups, if necessary. Bring warm clothes, a helmet, a head light, and sense of adventure. Check in will be at Camp Allegany. Although pre- registration is not required, if you are interested in borrowing a bike for the evening, please call (716) 379-6939, as bike availability is limited. 

The 5–8-mile fun ride is for all levels and will last up to 2 hours, depending on the weather. Riders will wind through the Red House area of the park. If there is no snow, any bike is welcomed.

Chenango Valley State Park
Come join us for an afternoon of hiking! We'll be offering two hikes of varying difficulty and distance. Our first hike will be a shorter walk of approx. 2-3 miles. It will take you through some of our easier trails and we'll talk about the park and its history along the way. The second hike will be a bit longer, covering approx. 4 miles and will take you on some more difficult trails. Nothing too serious, but the hills may get your heart pumping a bit more. You may even break a sweat. We'll have everyone meet at the large stone building near our beach parking area, where we'll have some drinks and snacks to get you fueled up before the hikes. Any questions, please call 607-648-5251 for more information. we will provide some drinks/snacks, but bring your own if you would like something specific. Hike will take place in any weather conditions.

The Friends of Clark Reservation will once again host a "First Day Hike" event on January 1, 2022 from 11 am to 1 pm. There will be guided hikes: an easier "walking hike" (about an hour) on mostly flat or slightly inclined ground, as well as a more challenging hike (about 2 hours) for those who would like more of a challenge. Hikers are also welcome to hike on their own. Refreshments will be available at the Clark Reservation Nature Center from 12 to 2. Children’s Snowshoe Lesson

Children and their caregivers are invited to the Classroom to enjoy a one hour snowshoeing lesson. We will learn how to put on our snowshoes and move in them before heading out on a flat 1/2 mile hike to look for animal tracks. Snowshoes will be available to borrow. John Jay began to inherit his land near Bedford, New York in 1785, three years after his father died. He began developing the land as an income-producing farm in 1787, strictly as an investment at first. He developed it further in the late 1790s, to become his home in retirement. You don't need to be a birder to enjoy the breathtaking sight of Snowy Owls on our beaches in winter! These regal visitors from the north are attracted to the tundra-like setting to hunt and rest. Join us to find them and other winter raptors, shorebirds, and waterfowl, and to learn about the dynamic coastal ecosystem in play during off-season. Photo opportunities abound!
